Compare cat insurance in New Zealand

What to look for in the wording — and where to get a quote that applies to your cat.

Cat insurance in NZ is offered by most generalist pet insurers plus a few species-specialist options. The premium for a given cat depends on age at signup, breed, indoor vs outdoor status (for some insurers), and the tier you pick. We don't quote ranges here — premiums come from each insurer's underwriting at quote time.

What to focus on in the wording

  • Dental cover scope. Cats develop dental issues early; the gap between "accident only" dental cover and "periodontal disease included" is the single biggest cost-of-care variable across NZ cat policies.
  • Pre-existing definition. A six-month lookback vs a lifetime exclusion is very different. Read the exact rule before assuming.
  • Hereditary cover. Pure-breed cats (Persians, Maine Coons, Ragdolls) have known hereditary risks. Some insurers cover, some exclude, some cover after a waiting period.
  • Renewal-age cap. Cats often live 16+ years; check whether the policy renews for new conditions into the senior decade.
  • Excess + co-pay. Read both — see the cost guide for the difference.
