Compare dog insurance in New Zealand
What to look for in the wording — and where to get a quote that applies to your dog.
Dog insurance is the largest segment of NZ pet insurance. Premiums depend on age at signup, breed, postcode, and the tier you pick. We don't quote ranges here — premiums come from each insurer's underwriting at quote time.
What to focus on in the wording
- Hereditary / congenital cover. The biggest single cover variable for dogs. Hip dysplasia, mitral valve disease (Cavaliers), elbow dysplasia, brachycephalic respiratory issues are well-documented breed risks. Some policies cover, some exclude, some cover after a waiting period.
- Bilateral conditions rule. If you claim on one cruciate ligament, is the other side then "pre-existing"? This rule alone can decide whether a second surgery is covered.
- Breed-specific exclusions. Some insurers maintain breed blocklists. Verify your breed isn't on the exclusion list before signing up.
- Dental cover scope. Small breeds and brachycephalic dogs develop dental issues early; check the dental sub-limit AND scope (accident-only vs periodontal-included).
- Renewal-age cap. Cover stops for new conditions at some age cap.
